Setien: Time puts everyone in their place

Quique Setien has denied that there is a bad atmosphere in the Barcelona dressing room but has admitted that there are some differences, which he has put down to the extraordinary circumstances of the 2019/20 season.

Since LaLiga Santander returned, Barcelona have drawn twice away from home and slipped into second place, two points behind leaders Real Madrid.

“We are all giving up a part of ourselves for the good of the team,” Setien said at his pre-match press conference.

“And maybe you have to sacrifice personal things for the benefit of the team.

“The reality is that this is a new situation, and I’m in a period where I’m learning a lot of things.

“It also happened to me in Las Palmas and Seville. This is a process; time puts everyone in their place.”

Setien also has to deal with the fallout of Arthur Melo‘s controversial transfer to Juventus.

The Brazilian midfielder has agreed a five-year contract with the Italian side but will remain at Barcelona until the end of the 2019/20 season.

“I have no doubt about his commitment,” Setien commented.

“He’s committed to being one of us, to be fully dedicated to achieving our goals.

“I have no doubt about him, he will be honourable until the last day.

“He has said that he will be in the best shape, and I will decide if he will play more or play less.”

With Barcelona falling behind Real Madrid, they have lost the driving seat in the race for the title but Setien has insisted that his squad need to focus on themselves and not worry about what Los Blancos do.

“We can only control ourselves,” Setien said of the situation.

“We have to improve so that what happened the other day doesn’t happen again.

“I hope that the opponent will make it easier for us, but we have to go out thinking about ourselves until the last day.”

Barcelona face Atletico Madrid on Tuesday and Setien will be hoping a victory can put pressure on Real Madrid, but he doesn’t believe the fixture against Los Rojiblancos is more important than any other.
