Diego Simeone was quick to highlight the importance of Jan Oblak after Atletico Madrid sealed their place in the Champions League quarter-finals with a 3-2 win at Anfield on Wednesday.
The Slovenian was a wall in Atleti‘s goal and Los Rojiblancos would surely have conceded more than two goals had they not had him in goal.
“He’s as important as all of the others – [Stefan] Savic, [Renan] Lodi, Felipe, Joao Felix,” Simeone said afterwards.
“But I have no doubt that we have the best goalkeeper in the world.
“Just like [Lionel] Messi resolves games offensively, Oblak does it defensively.”
Marcos Llorente came on and scored twice for the visitors, which proved decisive in sending them through, but Simeone recognised the efforts of the whole team.
“Llorente revolutionised the team,” the coach added.
“I’m very happy for the team and the club.
“It was a historic match against an extraordinary opponent with great intensity and a beautiful stadium.
“They pushed and held, without us ever moving away from our plan and with everyone’s effort we succeeded.
“It gives me an enormous joy because, although it seems simple, it’s not simple to win.”
