The soap opera regarding the Clasico‘s change of date has not found an early resolution, with the decision now postponed until Monday, October 21.
Barcelona and Real Madrid submitted their proposals to the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF)‘s Competition Committee, which is responsible for assessing their suggestions and making a decision on them.
Both clubs agreed that they do not want to play the first Clasico of the season at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu and were receptive to the idea of changing the date, with everything pointing towards the match taking place on December 18, however LaLiga were not in favour of the game being played on a Wednesday.
Instead, LaLiga suggested that the match be disputed on Saturday, December 7, so that the match is on a weekend and does not have as big an impact on the millions of people watching around the world.
In order to do so, though, Barcelona and Real Madrid‘s opponents on the 16th matchday, Real Mallorca and Espanyol respectively, would have to agree to have the fixture moved.
Since the possibility of playing on December 18 began to get traction, LaLiga have shown their dissatisfaction.
“The Clasico can’t be on that day, there are Copa [del Rey matches],” LaLiga president Javier Tebas told EFE.
However, that date did have the consensus of both clubs and the RFEF.
As such, the Competition Committee has given Barcelona, Real Madrid and LaLiga until Monday to come to an agreement and propose a date that satisfies all three parties.
LaLiga‘s report on the importance of this match and its impact on a weekend in comparison to a weekday proved to be decisive.
So, the one thing that seems clear is that Real Madrid and Barcelona will be able to rest next weekend.
This means that after this weekend’s round of fixtures, they will both play in the Champions League, with Los Blancos travelling to Turkey to face Galatasaray while Barcelona will fly to the Czech Republic to take on Slavia Prague, and not return to league action until the 11th matchday.
On the 11th matchday, the Catalans will host Real Valladolid on Tuesday, October 29, and Real Madrid will make the short trip to Leganes on Wednesday, October 30.
