Beyond his duties as Barcelona president, Josep Maria Bartomeu is also the head of managing the club’s sporting direction following the resignation of former vice-president Jordi Mestre in the summer.
Bartomeu assumed Mestre‘s responsibilities once he left and his first act was to appoint Victor Valdes as youth coach.
But the question needs to be asked. Did Valdes fit the profile of coach Barcelona wanted for the position?
This is a question that is based on more than his coaching ability, but rather his ability to adapt to the guidelines set out by the club for all underage teams to play.
They’re told to play with a 4-3-3 and follow the same methodology as the entire club.
Valdes has never let himself be driven though, and he didn’t follow the path set out for him. He never clicked with Patrick Kluivert, who was his superior, and he found no support coming from the president.
The parties became more distant every day until the matter exploded in a meeting with Kluivert and from there, there was no turning back.
